Job overview

This post offers the opportunity to join an established secondary care mental health team functioning as a CMHT within the walls of Cardiff prison.  The post holder will be part of an MDT offering assessment, support and intervention to prisoners with complex needs.  You will hold a caseload of individuals with serious and enduring illness that require Care Co-ordination and intervention.

The mental health service at HMP Cardiff works with individuals with primary and secondary care needs.  This Band 6 Occupational Therapy post sits within the secondary care part of the service but you will also have opportunity to work alongside primary care practitioners and support the facilitation of group interventions with those to mild and moderate needs.

The post offers the opportunity to work in a diverse and challenging setting, working with individuals to develop skills and strategies that instil hope for their future resettlement back into the community.  The post is based within HMP Cardiff full time but there is some scope to offer structured support during the transition back to community life.

Main duties of the job

  • Works without direct supervision to assess, plan, implement and evaluate Occupational Therapy interventions with autonomy in secondary care and community settings to include lone working e.g. patients own home.
  • To manage a defined caseload, using evidence based/client centred principles within physical and psychological medicine.
  • To develop expertise in identified clinical areas.
  • To provide leadership through supervision, induction, training and education of Band 5 Occupational Therapists, support staff and volunteers according to organisational policy and accepted professional standards.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to the education of Occupational Therapy students ensuring the maintenance of clinical standards through regular supervision of students on practice placement.
  • To work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and with voluntary organisations, local authority and other appropriate health and social care sectors to negotiate care provision across the primary/secondary care interface.
  • To maintain clinical records in accordance with legal requirements and professional standards.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
