We invite applicants to 2 new posts to help expansion of our Acute Medical services in Gloucestershire. Applicants qualified as Acute Physicians will join a growing number in Gloucestershire, but applicants from an organ based specialty will also be welcome and a blended job-plan may be possible with liaison from the relevant specialty lead. The department currently comprises 10 substantive physicians and 3 long term locums (approx. 11 WTE) and we look to increase this to cover an expanded service. Applicants wishing to work fewer than 10PAs per week will also be welcomed as we are a very flexible department.
Main duties of the job
Consultant reviews of patients seen on the General Medical Take Ongoing Care of patients in the AMU with daily review Lead care of patients presenting through SDEC Liaise with local GPs and other community practitioners to direct patients to the most appropriate access point first time Supervise medical trainees at every level of training (Med student through to ST7) Lead the Acute Medical MDT daily Contribute to the development of Acute Medical services in the region
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a Consultant Acute Physician, you will be responsible for the comprehensive management of adult patients presenting with acute medical conditions in our hospital setting. Your role will involve leading and coordinating the acute medical team, providing expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with a wide range of medical conditions.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake clinical assessments and examinations of patients presenting with acute medical conditions. • Provide accurate and timely diagnoses based on clinical evaluations and investigations. • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans for patients, ensuring they receive high-quality care. • Lead and supervise the acute medical care team, providing guidance and support to junior medical staff. • Collaborate with other medical specialties, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care. • Participate in the on-call rota, providing acute medical cover during evenings, weekends, and public holidays as required. • Engage in continuous professional development, staying up to date with the latest medical advancements and best practices. • Contribute to clinical audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives within the department. • Actively participate in teaching and training activities, mentoring junior doctors and medical students.
Requirements:
- Medical degree and registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility to register. • Completion of specialty training in Acute or General Medicine and inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, or equivalent qualifications. • Extensive experience in the management of acute medical patients in a hospital setting. • Proven leadership abilities, including the ability to lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues, patients, and their families. • Commitment to maintaining high clinical standards and providing patient-centered care. • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. • Willingness to participate in on-call duties and work flexible hours as required.
