The Cardiac Department at Alder Hey is the major referral centre for children and their families with all forms of heart disease from the Northwest region including Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, North and mid Wales and the Isle of Man with a catchment area of about 8.1 million. The cardiac team provides approximately 11,000 outpatients reviews per year at Alder Hey.

The Division of Surgery at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is seeking an experienced leader with extensive Cardiac Physiology diagnostic experience for what is a rare opportunity to be its new Head of Service.

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual with appropriate clinical experience and excellent management and leadership skills to lead on a clear strategy for the future of the department in alignment with the trusts Vision 2030. This is a full-time position within core hours Monday to Friday based onsite, with flexibility to meet the service needs. The post holder will be able to agree an individual job plan but it is envisaged that they will work clinically in their specialised area approximately 50% and 50% management.

Main duties of the job

  • -          The post holder will have overall responsibility and accountability for the operational management of the Cardiac Physiology Department and direct line management for the lead physiologists. -          Ensure the provision of the entire range of cardiac investigations and interventions for elective and non-elective paediatric patients. -          To provide leadership and advice on strategic direction of Cardiac diagnostic services by contributing to the Divisions Strategic Plan. They will lead on all business development within the service and will be expected to complete complex business cases. -          Accountable for the successful delivery of a highly specialist clinical service performing a range of high-quality cardiac investigations and therapeutic techniques. -          Accountable for ensuring appropriate uninterrupted service provision, financial planning and budget management. -          Accountable for ensuring appropriate uninterrupted service provision and ensuring robust financial planning and budget management with a focus on ensuring that the service is sustainable. -          Accountable for ensuring effective resource and HR management across the services ensuring appropriate capacity to meet clinical demand, with a focus on inpatient flow.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Will be responsible for the operational management and development of lead cardiac physiologists across 5 service lines: e.g. Echocardiography, Cardiac rhythm Management & Electrophysiology, CPET & Exercise Tolerance Testing, Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Research & Education.

Responsible for the safe and efficient running of diagnostic services across all service lines. Acts as the information asset owner (IAO) for clinical systems within the department.
