Superintendent Radiographer

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified female radiographer to join the breast screening management team at UHLG. The post holder will be a proactive and motivated individual, dedicated to continuous service improvement.

The post holder will be responsible for management, co-ordination and  delivery of high quality radiographic services within Breast Services.

Main duties of the job

  • To work autonomously to plan, organise, coordinate and manage the radiographic aspects of Breast Services, implementing and adjusting strategies when and where appropriate.
  • Remain an active member of the clinical radiography team, carrying out the full range of radiographic duties to the standard required by the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme quality guidelines.
  • Undertake Continued Professional Development to maintain the specialist knowledge and competencies required as both a unit manager and a clinical radiographer. Identify own training and development needs through the appraisal process.
  • Deputise for Breast Screening Programme Manager when required
  • Arrange and monitor preventative maintenance and breakdowns for all equipment associated with the Breast Screening Service and, in the event of equipment breakdown, initiate corrective or remedial action whilst maintaining service provision whenever possible.
  • Develop and deliver induction and orientation of new staff, provide mentorship and leadership of all staff on a daily basis.
  • Act as Radiation Safety manager, to include RPS role and IRMER responsibilities, liaise with the other RPS, health and safety representative, other Superintendent Radiographers and the Breast Services Manager to ensure a safe environment for all staff and patients.
  • Liaise closely with the multidisciplinary team involved in the provision of Breast Services and communicate effectively across professional boundaries.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the selection and recruitment of radiographic staff.
  • Liaise with Medical Physics to confirm that all equipment is performing to national standards.
  • Participate in strategic planning and organisation for future service provision and expansion of Breast Services.
  • Liaise closely with the Breast Service Superintendent Radiographers and Breast Screening Programme Manager to facilitate the smooth running of the combined service.
  • Carry out staff appraisals and actively encourage and support staff development.
  • Be responsible for the ordering, receipt and maintenance of radiographic stock and supplies.
  • Be responsible for the selection, procurement and commissioning of specialised radiographic equipment.
  • Contribute to the unit’s cost improvement targets.
  • Be aware of financial control and make efficient use of resources
  • Supervise radiographic workload, monitor performance, carry out work evaluation and ensure that all staff adhere to National, Trust and Unit policies and procedures. Maintain discipline of radiographic staff when standards are not met.
  • Develop, implement and review clearly defined working practices and policies giving guidance to all staff.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings to communicate information to all staff: present new ideas, explain service developments, lead and support staff through transformational changes and negotiate new working practices. Act as chair in the absence of the Breast Screening Programme Manager.
  • Monitor sickness and absence in line with Trust Policy.
  • Collate and analyse radiographic quality statistics and monitor radiographic performance to ensure continued compliance with NHSBSP quality standards
  • Record and monitor the allocation of annual leave for radiographic staff.
  • Liaise and negotiate with the Office Managers to ensure integration of the requirements of both the radiographic and the admin & clerical staff and to jointly plan and organise the practical aspects of running the service.
  • Participate in Health Promotion and promotion of the Breast Screening Service: developing and delivering presentations to Primary Care and service users, speaking to patient groups and targeting hard to reach groups.
  • Arrange and record mandatory training for all staff keeping mindful of service requirements and staffing provision.
  • Be responsible for implementation of and adherence to Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2000, Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR99), Health and Safety, Trust Policies and Procedures and the Data Protection act.
  • Maintain confidential information about staff, patients and other health service and Trust business.
  • Be able to take responsibility to effectively communicate with patients, relatives and other health service staff in the event of queries or concerns about Breast Services. Maintain a high level of interpersonal skills that are required within the stressful and disconcerting environment of a Cancer Screening Unit.
  • Be responsible for making complex decisions regarding radiographic quality control data and equipment faults so that a safe environment is ensured and maintained for both the patients and staff.
  • Co-ordinate the day to day radiographic aspects of the Liverpool Breast Screening Service, maintaining effective communication across the three geographically spread sites: 2 mobile screening units and one static screening unit.
  • Produce a monthly staffing rota, managing the radiographic staffing establishment at the four geographically spread sites of Breast Services ensuring that staffing is adequate for service provision: Co-ordination of annual leave, study leave, staff training, administration time and extended radiographic practice whilst ensuring that an appropriate skill mix is in place.
  • Maintain effective communication channels with Superintendent Radiographers/Programme Managers from other Breast Screening Units both regionally and nationally in order to share good practice across the NHSBSP.
  • Participate in breast screening meetings: to communicate Breast Service activity to representatives of local CCGs, PHE, NHSE, service purchasers, Health Promotion Representatives and the Director of Public Health. Confirming compliance with NHSBSP quality standards and advising the group on radiographic service provision and professional issues.
  • Attend regional NHSBSP radiographic meetings and provide a regular radiographic QA standards/activity report to the Regional QA Coordinator and the Regional Radiographic QA Co-ordinator.
  • Liaise closely with Health Promotion Representatives to develop literature and information sources for Breast Screening Clients and to encourage uptake of the Breast Screening Service.
  • Act as “IR(ME)R Lead” for Breast Services: Developing, implementing and reviewing IR(ME)R procedures and protocols. Developing and delivering IR(ME)R training for all radiographic and A&C staff and acting as a source of expert advice on IR(ME)R issues for all staff.
  • Act as “Disability Equality Lead” for Breast Services: Developing, implementing and reviewing the Disability Equality Policy for Breast Services. Developing and delivering disability equality training for all staff.
