This is a replacement post, which has become available following partial retirement and changes to working patterns of the existing senior rheumatology team. It will complement the Rheumatology service in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
The post holder will be joining a dynamic, forward looking and innovative medical team. The post holder will be based at the Princess of Wales Hospital. The post holder will be expected to help develop rheumatology services provided by the Health Board in PoWH and across CTMUHB as part of a wider integrated team.

The successful candidate will work alongside three rheumatology consultants in PoWH, as well as a further five rheumatology consultants across the Health Board. This post is currently supported by 2 rheumatology clinical nurse specialists, an osteoporosis clinical nurse specialist, Rheumatology Specialist trainee (StR), and a junior clinician on rotation (GP trainee - shared with the dermatology service).
The department typically undertakes around 500 new outpatient and 4000 follow-up outpatients per annum. This includes new, follow up & monitoring patients seen by the rheumatology team. In addition support is provided to inpatients via referral. There are no dedicated rheumatology inpatient beds. Outpatient osteoporosis and DXA services are also provided under the umbrella of the rheumatology department and the post holder may be expected to contribute to this service in agreement with colleagues and job-planning requirements.
The Rheumatology Department at PoWH receives support from the Department of General Medicine during instances when rheumatology patients require acute admission but with advice and input from Rheumatology. Outside normal working hours, the care of inpatients is supported by the on-call medical team. Each Rheumatology Consultant sees 8-10 New Patients per week, and 32-34 follow-up patients during 4-5 clinics held each week.
Day-unit treatments are supported by a dedicated facility based off-site in Neath Port Talbot Hospital and by a medical day unit for urgent treatment required on-site.
The team work closely with both the physiotherapy and occupational therapy departments to support multidisciplinary care for patients.
The successful candidate will be responsible for routine rheumatology work at PoWH. The successful candidate would be expected to develop an additional area of specialist interest and work with the existing team to integrate this into the service.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.
The post holder, in liaison with other consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with any Health Board operational / strategic plan(s) (as amended from time to time).
The post holder will support junior medical staff in day to day clinical activities within the department.
