Job overview

There is one substantive and one locum post available.

The post holder will be part of the cardiac on-call rota (1 in 6, class A). The post holder will be expected to take part in lists allocated to cardiac surgery, cardiac interventional catheter procedures, cardiac radiology imaging and other general paediatric anaesthesia lists.

Main duties of the job

The majority of lists are allocated 1.25 DCC PAs to allow for pre- and post-op clinical activity. The cardiac surgical lists in the main cardiac theatre are allocated 1.5 PAs for each session. In line with current Trust policy this post includes 1.5 PAs core supporting professional activities (SPA). Additional SPA is subject to negotiation for activities such as educational supervision, research, Trust management positions, and service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to provide perioperative anaesthetic care to patients with congenital heart disease having elective and urgent cardiac surgical procedures with and without cardiopulmonary bypass; cardiac diagnostic and interventional catheter procedures; cardiac radiological imaging; children needing essential procedures like long term vascular access, long term enteral feeding and other procedures needed for ongoing clinical care of these patients. The successful candidate will be expected to provide support to general anaesthesia consultant colleagues in caring for children with congenital heart disease having various non cardiac surgical and diagnostic procedures.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake general anaesthetic lists, alongside the cardiac activity, as part of their job plan.

Interests of potential applicants will be encouraged, and sessional commitments may vary accordingly. All theatre sessions are regularly reviewed by the Theatre Management Team according to the needs of service so that sessions may change.

Demand for emergency surgery is extremely high and therefore it is expected that any unallocated theatre time may be reallocated to accommodate emergencies during normal working hours.
