Job overview

We are excited to advertise a lead pharmacy education position, key to the transformation of education and training across Swansea Bay University Health Board. With time split between responsibilities for education and clinical services, this is an excellent opportunity for an advanced practicing pharmacist with leadership in pharmacy and passion for education, to influence the way we develop our future workforce.

You will have a senior role within the Health Board, responsible for shaping the delivery of our multi-sector foundation programme, including the imminent inclusion of independent prescribing competencies. They will also undertake a two-day per week service contribution to the Morriston site, although site negotiable if required.

The successful applicant will join an expanding and award winning team of core educators across the pharmacy division and be a role model for the profession and a champion for education. They will support the strategic work plan with opportunity to represent at regional and national level and will also be crucial in the delivery of training across our growing portfolio of programmes, including pharmacy and other healthcare undergraduates.

This post is uniquely positioned to challenge and change existing programmes and services. Our department and organisation is committed to innovation, improvement and high quality education and training. If you have ideas to share and the motivation to strive for better, we would like to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work collaboratively with Health Board sites and Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) to ensure the successful delivery of the multi-sector foundation programme. The post holder will also provide clinical services; including dispensary, ward-based clinical care and prescribing services where applicable.

Successful candidates will be appointed to either of the following roles dependant on qualifications and experience:

  • Advanced Pharmacist  – Band 8a (Permanent)

If personal specification is met and experience supports appointment.

  • Clinical Pharmacist – Band 7 (Secondment 12 months)

The successful candidate with a current level of experience that supports appointment to a clinical pharmacist role but requires further training to support an advanced practice education role will be appointed to the band 7 role on a secondment basis for a period of 12-months.

During the training period they will undertake a series of competencies as well as on the job training. On successful attainment of the competencies to the required level they will be appointed to the role of Clinical Education Lead and Speciality Pharmacist Band 8a. If the competencies are not achieved within 12 months from appointment this will not allow for successful progression to the Band 8a role and therefore the secondment will end on expiry of the 12-month period.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to work with educators and managers across acute hospital sites and sectors, including primary and community pharmacy, prison pharmacy and NHS 111 to ensure smooth planning, delivery, and support. They will also collaborate with other professional group leads (medical, nursing and allied health professions) in the planning and delivery of multi-professional education.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

We are able to consider applications for full or part-time commitments. There is also opportunity for some remote working.

There will be mentorship and opportunity to develop academic and clinical teaching skills if required. Leadership and management skills will also be further developed as part of one of our speciality pharmacy teams.
