Job overview

The purpose of this role is to provide timely assessment of children and young people who present in crisis. The post holder will provide timely assessments and brief interventions to Children and Young People who present in a crisis and will;

  • Provide support, advice and education to the Emergency Departments/Paediatric Wards/General Wards to build knowledge and skills of staff within these settings in the care and treatment of children and young people with mental health problems, and to ensure timely and effective treatment and discharge.
  • Manage their own workload, and work within clearly defined occupational policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the initial assessment and subsequent facilitation of  admission to the Tier 4 CAMHS Unit or AMHS if appropriate.

Main duties of the job

First point of contact for general hospital colleagues, responding to requests to assess children and young people’s clinical needs, demonstrating safe, clinical decision-making and expert care, referring to the Lead Nurse and/or on call medical team if appropriate.

Ensure a timely transfer to community CAMHS Teams as appropriate. Will work closely with the community CAMHS team during office hours, responding to emergency referrals of young people presenting in crisis. Ensure young people are seen in a timely manner and risk is assessed and a management plan is developed accordingly.
