An interesting and rare opportunity has arisen to join a small dedicated supportive team who specialise in Enteral Nutrition across the Trust. Prior experience of feeding tubes is essential, however full training for more complex situations will be given. As well as daily troubleshooting of feeding tubes, the role includes assessment, consent and practical insertion of long-term feeding tubes including PEGs. A confident empathetic nature is required as difficult conversations feature heavily in this patient centred role. Teaching and auditing are a key part of the team’s role to improve outcomes for our diverse patient group.
This is a clinical role that encompasses the management of existing patients with feeding tubes and the assessment of new patients who may require long term feeding, working across 3 hospital sites. There is a high level of independent working where excellent communication and clinical skills are required. Complex conversations with patients, families and carers which can be emotive and challenging are common within the role. The successful candidate will, after training, be required to assist in the placement of PEG feeding tubes in the endoscopy department which does involve a scalpel to skin procedure. The team provide training to staff of all levels including doctors and a positive attitude towards training and development is required. Teaching patients to manage their tubes independently is also a key part of the position. Flexibility is crucial as we respond to feeding tube-related emergencies in a bid to avoid hospital admissions and improve patient journeys.
