An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ward Leader to join a established team on Ward 3 Day Case Unit on the Leigh Site.  We are looking for somebody who is able to work 37.5 hours per week.

Ward 3 Day Case Unit is a mixed sex elective surgical unit covering all surgical specialities including ENT, Colo-rectal, Vascular, Gynaecology and breast. We also have a treatment room that we offer ophthalmology services.

We have also successfully been accredited as a Surgical Hub within the Greater Manchester area and we are looking to appoint a Ward Leader who will be a positive role model and who can contribute to the trusts positive vision for the future and drive the Surgical Hub.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will need to be a highly motivated Registered Nurse with significant relevant post registration experience. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a driving passion and determination to  ensuring that quality and safety of patient care and experience is paramount.

The post holder will demonstrate key leadership and management skills and will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership to the ward team. The post holder must have the skills needed to engage, inspire and motivate staff in the clinical area and a passion to initiate and sustain new innovative ways of working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To lead the team in providing evidence based nursing/midwifery care ensuring that care is assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated utilising a patient centred approach to care. Be responsible for reviewing and updating nursing care plans and documentation.
  • To co-ordinate nursing activity in the ward environment and ensuring the smooth operational running of the ward.
  • Responsible for ensuring that there are adequate staffing levels and appropriate skill mix to meet the needs of the ward.
  • Ensure patient care is of a high standard.
  • Responsible for recognising and responding appropriately to situations which require immediate action.
  • Deputise for the matron.
  • Ensure performance standards are met in accordance with agreed objectives.
  • Manages effectively the use of allocated resources/funding.
  • To lead the ward team in the management of ward environment in order to meet Trust objectives for Risk Management and Health & Safety.
  • Responsible for management of staff within the ward. Actively involved in selection, recruitment and retention of staff
  • Ensure that staff receive an annual appraisal/IPR and a personal development plan.
  • Ensure that all staff have continual effective registration with NMC and are aware of NMC Code of Professional conduct.
