Job overview

An exciting fixed term maternity leave opportunity has become available for an experienced, enthusiastic and proactive Children's Nurse to support the development of the Childrens Allergy Service at the Leeds Childrens Hospital.

Childrens Allergy is a busy specialist service and offers multiple consultant led and nurse led clinics per week. The post holder will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team providing care to children with allergic diseases (i.e. food allergy, allergic rhinitis, eczema, asthma, medication/latex allergy etc..)

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a team of very friendly and knowledgeable Paediatric Allergy Nurses and will be providing a hands-on clinical role supporting the consultant-led Paediatric Allergy Clinics with diagnostic testing (skin prick testing) and providing health education and self-management advice to Children, Young People and their families in a busy and fast-paced environment. The Allergy Staff Nurses also provide independent nurse-led skin prick testing clinics, and support the nurse-led penicillin allergy de-labelling clinic.

In addition to the supporting the allergy clinics, the post holder will assist in the coordination and delivery of food/medication challenges and subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy treatment in the dedicated nurse-led Children's Allergy Day Unit (CADU).

The Allergy Nurses also play a pivotal role in supporting Children/Young People and their families at home and are often the first point of contact for emails and phone calls for families, nurseries/schools or colleagues in primary care requiring support or advice.

We care for children with severe allergies, which can be multi-systemic (food allergy/asthma/eczema) and often this can have a significant impact on Children/Young People's psychological well-being. Therefore, an integral part of the Allergy Nurse role is developing relationships with Children/Young People and their families & providing ongoing support, reassurance and signposting to other resources as needed.

Job responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and confident childrens nurse who has a strong interest in allergic diseases and is enthusiastic to further develop their knowledge and skills in the area. This role requires an individual to be confident to work independently, possessing excellent communication and time management skills. Confidence in working autonomously, as well as a commitment to work as part of a team are essential requirements of this post. The Paediatric Allergy team has weekly MDT meetings and monthly Clinical Governance meetings, and the allergy nurses are integral members of the Paediatric Allergy service.

Full training and support will be provided no previous allergy experience is required. Continuing professional development will be encouraged and ongoing support and mentorship will be provided. All paediatric food and medication challenges are delivered in the Childrens Allergy Day Unit (CADU) in Clarendon Wing, LGI. Paediatric allergy clinics are delivered at both Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital and the successful applicant would need to have access to reliable transport to be able to travel to either location. However, please discuss this with us if this would stop you from applying for this post. The hours are 22.5 (3 days) per week and it is anticipated that the maternity cover will be required until January 2026.

The service operates over weekdays only, there are no expectations for the successful applicant to work nights or weekends. Most of the allergy nurses work set days across the week, although flexibility is appreciated to ensure adequate clinical cover. Work days tend to start at 0815 to 0900 and usually finish by 1700. Variation in the specific start and finish times will vary on a week-to-week basis depending on the weekly rota and clinical cover required. The Childrens Allergy team are committed to improving the lives and outcomes of young people. If you have experience in caring for children and young people with allergic disease or, are wanting to learn more about this varied and interesting field and want to work in an amazing supportive and dynamic team, we would love to hear from you!
