The Forensic Outreach Liaison Service for learning disability and Autism have an exciting job opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist to join our service as part of an exciting pilot within the All Age Community Forensic Services SLT pathway.

The FOLS LDA service is available to people over 18 with a diagnosis of learning disability and/or autism who have offended or are at risk of offending across West Yorkshire. The service consists of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who provide a formulation driven, trauma informed and strengths-based approach to risk management. The team offer risk assessment, direct therapeutic interventions and support patients transitioning out of secure settings, as well as consultation, advice, supervision and training to relevant services and partners.

This post is suitable for a Band 5 SLT who has experience and confidence to work with people with LD and ASD or forensics. The post is also suitable for a more experienced SLT interested in developing their skills and specialism within forensics, learning disabilities and Autism. There is the opportunity for a Band 5-6 developmental post, whereby support would be provided to progress through a competency framework.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for a SLT, ideally with some experience working with learning disabilities, Autism and mental health. You would work as part of an MDT alongside partner agencies to keep people safe, promoting communication and independence.

The post holder will provide a specialist communication service, using expert skills to assess, advise and provide appropriate group and individual interventions to ensure individuals communication strengths and challenges and recognised, supported and maximised. There will be opportunities for involvement in service development. Dysphagia is not a requirement of the role.

The work will be undertaken in a variety of settings within community, secure and inpatient settings. The post holder will liaise effectively with all relevant professionals, carers, and family members to ensure the communication needs of each individual are recognised and supported.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be working with service users within community settings as part of the Forensic Outreach and Liasion Service for learning disabilities (FOLS LD). They will also provide support to Speech and Language therapists in other localities providing support and advice where required.

The post holder will work effectively as part of the community team, supporting individuals who are or at risk of being in contact with the criminal justice system or hospital settings.

The post holder will identify the clinical priorities at both an operational and strategic level for Speech and Language Therapy for this service user group.

The postholder will work effectively as part of the MDT to provide highly specialist assessment, therapy, advice and support to adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, who have specific needs in relation to their communication.

The post-holder independently assesses, diagnoses and manages the communication, in particular those with the most complex difficulties, including those with challenging behaviour, to maximise appropriate health and social benefits. It may also include the management of service users for whom English is not the first spoken language.

As a member of the community forensic MDT, the post holder provides an effective and responsive service working alongside other team members to meet the needs of individuals.

The post-holder provides both direct and indirect intervention, consultation, advice and support; working within a multi-disciplinary model in order to ensure that the inter-agency needs of service users are met.
