Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full and part time enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to support the Band 7 and team of nursing staff within Ward 6 Cardiology at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. You will be an experienced RGN in Cardiology  and be able to lead and assess the work of the nursing team building upon your own clinical and managerial experience.

The successful candidates will be able to role model continuous professional behaviour and demonstrate through personal behaviour the core values of the Trust. They will be able to evidence an enthusiastic, approachable and friendly manner towards patients, nursing and multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidates must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a department in an efficient and effective manner. This will involve the assessment and implementation of appropriate care for new and current patients whilst ensuring adequate staffing levels are maintained and resources used appropriately.

Showing commitment and direction to the team as a whole you will actively participate in the teaching, training and supervision of all grades of staff.

You will be required to be receptive to change, be dynamic and demonstrate active assistance and support to your more senior colleagues in the ongoing development of the department.

Completion of the post graduate certificate in cardiac care is desirable for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the Band 7 with the continuous improvement of the department, effectively monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of care that are reflected by patient experience.
  • In conjunction with the ward/ department manager be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of their ward/ department/team, effectively motivating, and directing staff to ensure that time and resources are managed through effective teamwork.
  • To ensure that staff have a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities and of the standards of performance and conduct expected of them during their span of duty.
  • To organise their team daily deploying staff appropriately according to their skills and experience.
  • To ensure that maximum usage of available bed base is always maintained by utilising agreed operational strategies to facilitate appropriate admissions, and timely discharge to meet the delivery of the EDD process and Nurse led discharge.
  • In conjunction with the ward manager receive the calls, where applicable, from the care co-ordinator centre and liaise with appropriate staff to co-ordinate admissions into the ward /department.
  • To deputise for ward/ department manager as necessary.
  • In conjunction with the ward manager take responsibility for implementing and reviewing clinical practices to ensure that they are cost effective.
