An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative and enthusiastic individual to join the team as Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse within Critical Care, Ward 38, Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The successful candidate must have the ability to motivate staff in a professional manner with the ability to lead the team and maintain high standards of care. The successful candidate must have experience in critical care, a critical care qualification and NMC registration.

The candidate must demonstrate willingness to develop leadership and management skills and show an ability to respond to change within practice. The candidate must demonstrate effective communication along with a calm manner in situations of extreme workload. They should strive for excellence in patient safety and quality with a drive to continuously drive quality improvement and change.

The Critical Care unit specialises in a range of services which include:

  • General Medicine
  • Burns & Plastics
  • Obstetrics
  • Upper GI & General Surgery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Operational running of the unit co-ordinating patient flow to optimise capacity

Working alongside the Senior nurse team to manage and support staff within a team structure

Respond to clinical emergencies within the department and demonstrate competence to lead and support less experienced staff

Work collaboratively with the MDT

Promote education and training and encourage a culture of education

Lead and participate in quality improvement

Investigate incidents and share learning

Appropriately manage resources

Job Purpose

  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.
