Main duties of the job

The main purpose of the role is to develop and deliver medical education to enable medical students to grasp community and inpatient care in old age psychiatry in all its aspects. This will involve taking a lead role in the performance of the Old Age Psychiatry medical education placement (AP1).

A comprehensive knowledge of old age psychiatry is required for this, as the successful applicant will need to form the positive links between voluntary, independent, and statutory services so that students are able to absorb and participate in all activities relevant to care pathways.

To ensure systems are in place for clinical supervision to team members including appraisals and annual professional development plans. Identifying the need for specific training within the area of old age psychiatry based on learning objectives.

Overcoming barriers in engaging and supporting clinical staff in teaching medical student areas. To be a lead specialist in undergraduate medical education for old age psychiatry.

Actively support the trusts development of professional roles and guidelines. Empower all team members to participate in implementing change by using problem solving, considering potential conflicts and planning resolution.

The post holder will ensure that the staff they are responsible for attending relevant statutory training as identified by the trust.

The post holder will support the development of annual skills profiling of their team.

To ensure that all clinical staff are offered opportunities to develop skills and knowledge, and keep up to date with current practice, attend accredited courses and engage in own continuous professional development.

The post holder will source the supply of external, specific training to meet the needs of the service.

The post holder will ensure good communication systems are in operation within the clinical area that enhance high quality care and teaching for example, IT, verbal, interpersonal, written.

Develop strategic thinking skills, promoting an umbrella view of clinical academic perspectives for the multi-professional team. Ensure that awareness of clinical and resource management information is used analytically to inform decisions that balance service user, student and educational objectives.

Promote the use of critical analysis points and innovative approaches to ensure education is reviewed according to student learning objective and university directions.

The post holder will ensure high standards of medical education are maintained within the team both through delivery and management.
