The appointee will work at the registrar level. Daily activities will be varied and include some or all of ward work (pre- and post-operative care of thoracic surgical patients), attendance in theatre for major, intermediate and minor procedures, attendance at gastroscopy (voluntary) sessions, out-patient clinics as well as multi-disciplinary meetings for lung and upper GI (voluntary) cancers.
Departmental Educational Activities: The thoracic surgical unit is committed to teaching and training, supporting all aspects of both. We support our junior staff with research and encourage the publication of papers (case reports, original studies and reviews). We envisage the appointee being fully involved with this aspect of the department’s work.
Post-graduate teaching consists of regular Consultant teaching ward rounds as well as less formal daily ward rounds. There are weekly teaching sessions for the FY1/2 and CT doctors and weekly teaching sessions for the CTs/StRs.
There are also opportunities for undertaking teaching sessions for nursing staff provided by the FY2/ CT level trainees and the appointee would be encouraged to participate in this.
In addition to the departmental teaching, there are numerous teaching sessions within the hospital for the surgical junior staff (Tuesday a.m. and Friday p.m.), regular (weekly) anatomy teaching at the UEA and regular (weekly) teaching sessions for the FY1s in surgery and medicine.
