An exciting opportunity for a Research Nurse or Clinical Trial Practitioner to join the Improving Black Health Outcomes Study, part of the NIHR BioResource based at University College London Hospital, UCLH.

Health research studies have rarely focused on the specific health needs and experiences of people from Black communities. This can be problematic since the findings might not always apply to everyone equally. As a result, people from Black communities have often not benefitted from advances in health research. By creating the IBHO BioResource we hope to change this, so that in future, when researchers find something important, for example, a gene that relates to a health condition, we can be sure that this is true for Black communities too.

We are looking to recruit highly motivated individuals, who are able to work autonomously as well as part of a team, to recruit participants to the study and take samples.

This role will be based across UCLH and North Middlesex University Hospital where you will have key working relationships with both sites. You will be managed by the Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Alliance for Research senior Nurse (STAR Nurse) who also works across sites.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working in the Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Alliance for Research Team (STAR Team) who work across North London conducting research for this population group.

The post holder day to day responsibilities will be to screen for patients attending clinics who have Sickle Cell Disease or Thalassemia. Once patients are identified to approach potential participants to inform them of the study, complete the consent procedure and obtain blood samples to ship to the central laboratory for processing.

The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with paperwork completion and spreadsheet trackers.

The post holder will be expected to work across UCLH and NMUH as part of their roles delivering this project.

Although this team works with both adult and paediatric patients, the post holder will only be working with adult patients to support the Improving Black Health Outcomes Study.

This vacancy would suit a nurse who is looking to get some experience in research to understand how the role work. Due to the limited funding the post is only funded till the end of September 2025, therefore this position would be well suited for a secondment.

The job has standard working hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, however we can accommodate condensed hours and will take personal circumstances into consideration when allocating staff across the sites.
