The Great North Children’s Hospital has an exciting opportunity to apply for a Band 7 Nurse Specialist as a Team Lead for the Children's Haematology/Oncology HSCT and Apheresis Service.

This exciting service is complex and rapidly evolving. It supports patients requiring allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplants, as well as CAR-T therapy for haematology and oncology conditions. Along side this, the team conduct associated apheresis procedures such as Extra-Corporeal Photopheresis, Stem Cell Harvests, Leukapheresis and Red Blood Cell Exchange.

Being based at GNCH, the nursing team can expect that the host organisation will provide the infrastructure, administrative support and governance required for individuals and the multi-disciplinary team to thrive within an ambitious and innovative culture.

Candidates should hold a clear UK drivers License.

The post holder will:

  • Provide line management support to the band 6 Specialist Nurses within the service.
  • Provide support and specialist nursing advice to the specialist nurse team within the speciality.
  • Provide support local and regional services both NHS and Non-Profitable organisations, working collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team.
  • Collect data within the and employ this data in service improvement.
  • Develop pathways and protocols for service provision within this patient group.
  • Support young people and families approaching transition to adult services.
  • Act as a contact for service users providing expert nursing support including inpatient and outpatient visits and telephone advice and triage.
  • Network with other HSCT teams nationally and internationally
  • Be willing and able to contribute to an on call service that covers 24/7 for emergency Red Cell Exchange. We are seeking people trained as children’s nurses and those who have a strong background and interest in transplant and apheresis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible and have line management responsibility for the nurse specialist team which has many complexities. The post holder will:

Communicate highly complex, sensitive information with patients and carers on condition related information to ensure their active involvement in the medical care planning, treatment delivery and informed consent process.

Provide specialist advice to a range of health care professionals within the scope of specialist practice with ability to help patients understand and interpret this advice negotiating treatment plans.

Compile comprehensive nursing records in accordance with Trust guidelines.

Liaise with other nursing staff and members of the multidisciplinary team in order to achieve optimum levels of care in relation to specialised area of practice.

Access external networks with peers to share good practice.

Communicate with patients, carers and the wider multi-disciplinary team. Receives and delivers highly complex, confidential and sensitive information (e.g. child protection or adult safeguarding).

Assesses complex issues and facilitates decision making relating to patient care, safety treatment options and outcomes, and supervises others in doing this.

Communicate with other wards and departments as well as external agencies.

Provides specialist advice: to individual patients and carers to members of clinical team to support groups to allied professionals / multi-disciplinary meetings

Will be expected to contribute to scholarly activity and communication through publication of work.
