Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the ENT team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, by expanding the service with a 12 month fixed term contract Locum Consultant Paediatric Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon. This is a full time post, attracting 10 programmed activities (PAs). The post is based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. There is a possibility of extension of the employment period, as there may be a change within the service that would offer a substantive position.

Applications are invited from accredited specialists in Paediatric Otolaryngology who are on the Specialist Register at interview stage. Completing a sub-specialty paediatric otolaryngology fellowship would be essential.

The service provides secondary and tertiary level paediatric services for 0-16 year olds, from Birmingham and extending tertiary referrals from around the West Midlands and beyond.

Main duties of the job

The postholder must be able to manage a comprehensive range of paediatric emergencies including trauma and airway emergencies, as well as an elective programme. The postholder will participate in the on-call commitments on a 1 in 8 frequency.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional

Support the trust’s key performance indicators such as 18 weeks referral to treatment.

Engage fully in all aspects of the trust’s clinical governance processes and specialty meetings.

Participation in the Major Incident Procedure.

Responsibility for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines such as GMC ‘Duties of a Doctor’ and acting in accordance with them.

Clinical

Provide services for children and young people in Birmingham and the surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury.

It is expected that the post holder will participate in all Departmental activities including on call, daily ward rounds, emergency theatre list rota, audit and teaching.

There is an expectation to participate in research, presentation and publication
