Job overview

Job Purpose The Lactation Consultant will work in partnership with the Infant Feeding Lead and a multi professional Health  Visiting team in the provision of a specialist breastfeeding clinic for breastfeeding dyads living in Brent. The  role is integral to the 0-19 healthcare team in maintaining UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards and complying with  the WHO code.

The post holder will be responsible for: To act as a resource of clinical lactation expertise and skill, providing support to women and babies with complex breastfeeding needs in clinics and at home. To Collaborate with other healthcare professionals e.g., midwives and colleagues to support  breastfeeding dyads.

Main duties of the job

Counsel mothers and families on initiation, exclusivity, and duration of breastfeeding, and to support mothers in high-risk situations. Provide in depth breastfeeding assessment, advice, and care plans. Provide support that is sensitive to the needs of the mother and family in working towards their individual breastfeeding goals. Being a resource for health visiting skill mix and other professionals to learn about specialist breastfeeding. Empower mothers and families to manage challenges as they arise. Advocate for breastfeeding women, infants, children, families, and communities. Provide guidance to colleagues relating to breastfeeding challenges.

1. Practice within CLCH policies and guidelines; and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Code of Professional Conduct (IBLCE) for IBCLCs 2. Provide services that protect, promote and support breastfeeding.  3. Act with due diligence  4. Preserve the confidentiality of clients.  5. Report accurately and completely to other members of the healthcare team  6. Exercise independent judgment and avoid conflicts of interest.  7. Maintain personal integrity.  8. Uphold the professional standards expected of an IBCLC.  9. Comply with the IBLCE Disciplinary Procedures
