Main duties of the job

Based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, the Clinical Neuroscience service caters to South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Lincolnshire, and North Nottinghamshire, serving over 2.2 million people. It encompasses Neurology, Neurosurgery, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and Neurophysiology.

As the Trust’s first Academic Directorate, the unit emphasizes research, structured around seven themes: neurodegeneration, cerebrovascular (including stroke), neuroinflammation, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, neurophysiology, and industry/commercial research. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The duties of this post are equivalent to Foundation Year 2 / Core Trainee Year 1 / 2 level.

The Directorate operates 60 adult neurology beds, including a 16-bed Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and an 8-bed Neuro Assessment Unit, alongside 41 neurosurgical beds, 20 Neuro Critical Care Beds, and a Neuro Day Care Unit. Paediatric services are offered at the adjacent Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Consultant-led neurology teams manage inpatient services, including hyper-acute care for strokes and acute neurological conditions. Outpatient sessions and district outreach services are available in Doncaster, Worksop, Mexborough, Lincoln, Rotherham, Chesterfield, and Barnsley. The team includes 40 Consultant Neurologists and Stroke Physicians (seven holding Neurology Chairs), 13 National Training Number Specialist Registrars, and four academic specialist registrars. Nurse specialists and allied professionals provide extensive support for patients with neurological disabilities.
