Job overview

GP Out of Hours Call Handler with driving responsibilities for the GP Out of Hours service based at Leighton Hospital required.

Shifts will be e-rostered and worked flexibly at weekends, and to cover sickness and absence as and when.  Variable shift times 0800-1400, 1400-2000 and occasional nights if required.

Call Handler and administration duties include receiving calls on the Health Professional Line, entering patient demographics and supporting the clinical team, whilst driving and chaperoning, where necessary, the GP on home visits.

Knowledge of the local area is desirable, along with previous experience of working within a healthcare setting

Main duties of the job

You must have relevant experience working in an admin and clerical role and have experience of dealing with the general public.  We are looking for individuals that can work under pressure with accuracy.

The role will include taking accurate patient details, whilst ensuring that calls are handled effectively, efficiently and in a manner that ensures dignity and confidentiality. Welcome and receive patients into the workplace and maintain the preparation and flow of patient data/information electronically ensuring all data/information is maintained to the agreed quality standard.

The post holder will also be expected to organise own workload in order to maintain an efficient and professional service.

You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work as a team member and on your own initiative be able to prioritise your own workload.

A Full UK Driving license is essential as you will be required to assist GP's on Home Visits (car provided).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Providing admin support and ad-hoc duties to the OOH clinical team.
  • Receive telephone calls to the GP OOH Service via the Health Professional Line.
  • Receive and book patients, signposting as necessary.
  • Accurately transcribe patient demographic details onto the Adastra system.
  • To arrange patient transport either by ambulance or ERS, according to Trust protocol when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff and all necessary departments.
  • To liaise with the Pathology Department regarding the results of patient blood tests.
  • Adhere to all working protocols and procedures.
  • Liaise with Emergency Department when necessary.
  • To drive the clinician to home visits safely and within agreed standard timescales, as well as providing an escort to the clinician where necessary.
  • To be responsible for loading and unloading the appropriate medical equipment in the vehicle and ensuring all necessary equipment/stationery is available in the car prior to call out.
  • To maintain the security and cleanliness of the vehicle at all times.
  • To comply at all times with the Road Traffic Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Completion of vehicle and journey documentation.
  • Act as a chaperone if requested.
