The Portering department at The Royal Marsden Sutton operates a 24/7 365 service across both of our sites, the main objective of this service is to provide a first-class service to our Patients staff and visitors.

The Portering and Security department is a busy working environment that deals with a diverse workload on a daily basis. To provide a point of contact for the staff and patients across the Trust requiring the support and services of the wider Facilities Directorate, and to assist members of Facilities Directorate with a range of portering duties including support to the trust Security team in an emergency situation.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of a team to provide a quality, Portering/Security service to the Trust, that will ensure that all patients and visitors are courteously assisted and directed in a manner that will reflect positively on the Trust. Ensuring that a safe crime free environment for staff, patients and visitors is maintained at all times. The duties of the general porter are to be flexible in their work pattern and to assist in the day-to-day operation of the portering departments.

The Post holder could be required to work across Trust sites to best provide support to the Facilities Directorate and the wider organization, but it is largely anticipated that the primary base will be at Sutton. Whilst workload will largely be determined by direct line management.

  • Dealing with inquiries from patients, visitors, and staff in an efficient and polite manner.
  • To ensure that all patients and visitors are courteously assisted and directed in a manner that will reflect positively on the service and the Trust.
  • To escort patients by chair, trolley, bed or accompanying on foot in keeping with the current regulations, and to assist in movement of patients as required.
  • To transport equipment, samples and specimens to medical areas as required.
  • To cover the Trust waste management operatives during planned & unplanned leave.
  • To deliver deceased patients to the mortuary displaying respect for the patient’s dignity and in keeping with Trust policy.
