Job overview

This post is for doctors who are currently in a middle grade position in Emergency Medicine who need to complete specific ACCS competencies to enable their career progression.

The applicant should be aiming to gain more experience before entering formal training at ST4 onwards or by the CESR route and Article 14, or the Defined Route of Entry into Emergency Medicine (DREEM). This post is a middle grade position which will experience in a supported Emergency Medicine department.

This is a new middle grade position as Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine with the potential to consolidate their experience in Emergency Medicine. The post will allow the applicant to develop Ultrasound and Research skills. This department has a strong link to ultrasound training and teaching and will provide support to interested candidates to achieve Level 1 & Level 2 Ultrasound skills. The Trust has strong links to Cambridge ultrasound school and will provide the opportunity for your ultrasound competencies to be signed off.

This post will also allow you to take part in the active research and quality improvement programs within the department. Many of the research projects have been presented in international conferences and also published.

The post duration is up to 24 months. The post with be compliant with RCEM 2021 guidance on Education Development Time.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be part of the multidisciplinary clinical team as middle grade in the Emergency Department.
  • Provide high quality care, knowledge, and skill for the patients either directly or by supervision and floor management of the junior clinical staff
  • To maintain the standards of the College of Emergency Medicine and the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • To assume clinical responsibility for patients brought to the department by the emergency services, self-referring or referred by GP
  • You are expected to deal with unexpected emergencies including those resulting from infectious diseases like COVID-19
  • To be part of Trauma Team co-ordinated management of major trauma
  • To be immediately available for opinion, guidance and advice on any patient seen by a junior clinician in the ED at any time during the rostered duty shift
  • To assist in conducting follow-up review of patients where considered appropriate by the Consultants
  • To contribute to the production of departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence-based best practice
  • To attend in the event of a hospital Major Incident call if available and off duty
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Identify and act appropriately upon Safeguarding issues in children appropriately

There are four posts in total and will complement a team of fifteen other SPR’s in the department. This enables both the provision of high-quality middle doctor staff to the Emergency Department and competencies for their career progression.

The appointment is suitable for those with middle grade Emergency Department experience as Specialty Doctor (old Staff Grade), Clinical Fellow, LAT STR or completed ST1 or ST2. Applicants from Anaesthetics, ITU, Acute medicine backgrounds or completed GPSTR training will be considered if proceeding to a career in Emergency Medicine.

Many of our Clinical Fellows pass their MRCEM within two years of starting this post. There is an intense training program associated with this post.

The post duration is up to 24 months. The post with be compliant with RCEM 2021 guidance on Education Development Time (EDT).  Structured pay will be subject to annual increments as per the Junior doctor’s contract. A full induction will be offered at the beginning of the post.

Educational Supervision and Career progression

The appointee will have an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for the duration of the placement. The appointee will be expected to maintain a portfolio of evidence of competencies, work place-based assessments, training undertaken with supervisions and a personal development plan. This will be in keeping with the requirements of the e-portfolio and Curriculum of the College of Emergency Medicine.

Career progression will be a priority and guidance can be provided by the Emergency Medicine Trust College tutor and Educational Supervisor. Associate or Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine will be expected. E-portfolio applications will be supported.
