Maintenance Assistant / Boiler Person

The Estates Department is looking for an enthusiastic Maintenance Assistant / Boiler Person to be part of the multi-disciplined Estates Team.

The role will involve work of a routine nature, minor repairs and routine planned maintenance activities as directed, also being responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of the Hospital’s Steam Generating Plant ensuring compliance with the Trust’s safety standards and procedures.

Main duties of the job

As part of a multi-disciplined Estates Team, to assist with estates maintenance activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine. To be able to carry out minor works and routine planned maintenance activities as directed by management, ensuring compliance with Trusts safety standards, policies and procedures. Taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment. Exchange routine information to inform colleagues, staff, patients and contractors

The post holder shall be an active member of an effective and efficient  team and must demonstrate flexible working and co-operation with other trades.

The post holder will work 37.5 hours per week on a shift rota, this will include nights and weekends.

The post holder must be capable of working on their initiative and have the ability to work with minimum supervision, working in compliance with all relevant statutory obligations & good practice guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

When covering the Boiler house the post holder will be in charge of the main boiler plant for the Hospital, which supplies steam (for cooking and sterilisation) hot water and heating to all areas of the Hospital.

Responsible for the daily safety checks on boilers, chemical dosing tanks and water treatment systems. The post holder covers sickness and holidays of Boiler house staff and attends site at weekends and nights as required.

To carry out regular cleaning of air conditioning vents and grills

When covering the boiler house the post holder will be responsible to lock up or open up (depending on what shift they are working) all the external doors to the Hospital.

At all times to carry a Trust communication device (pagers and /or two-way radio) to facilitate immediate response to emergencies. The post holder will be required to attend the Hospital fire alarm if activated, this duty includes first contact with the fire brigade and contact to the nominated Hospital fire officer by radio.

The post holder will be required to fetch and change Medical Gas cylinders as requested by the nursing staff.

To work in accordance with the requirements of the Trust performing tasks to include water sampling and data logging & complete water log books in accordance with HTM04-01

To work without supervision on minor works.

Ability to carry out priority work requirements on essential patient equipment used in patient care package and having a direct impact to the whole patient experience i.e., patient toilets/wash facilities.

Must be able to communicate with a range of staff and clients on at all levels.

Ability to understand and comment on maintenance policies.

Maintain and repair health service property and equipment.

To assist other trades as required

Frequent requirement to exert heavy physical effort for several long periods i.e. heavy repairs, lifting and moving equipment.

Ability to work in unpleasant situations or environments, May be required to assist works in areas of uncontrolled hazardous i.e. bodily fluids and raw sewage whilst completing drain maintenance.

Ability to carry out works in areas requiring emotional sensitivity e.g. mortuary, children’s ward, general wards and ITU.

Ability to participate in estates surveys and audits.

Ability to process own timesheets.

Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade
