Job overview

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Stroke Physician. This post will be primarily based at Watford General Hospital where all the clinical sessions will occur.  The successful candidate will join a dynamic, friendly stroke team of three Substantive Stroke Consultants and be part of the larger medicine for the Elderly department.

The appointee will provide 8.5PA of inpatient and outpatient services, including support of the thrombolysis service (9:00-17:00), provision of ward rounds on the hyper-acute and acute Stroke Unit and participation in Stroke outpatient and TIA clinics.

1 SPA flexibility and an additional 0.5 SPA (2 in total a week) if you agree to help supervise trainees.

To enhance our reputation as an Employer of Choice, the Trust has approved the following Recruitment and Retention incentive for each successful candidate.

  • £7,000 golden hello payment for new recruits to be paid in 12 equal instalments
  • £12k recruitment and retention fee year 1, 2 & 3 (paid in equal monthly instalments) (new recruits and existing consultants)
  • Successful candidates will be also eligible for a relocation allowance in excess of £12,000 (if required)

Main duties of the job

  • Providing a service at Watford General Hospital, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
  • Liaising with Consultants in the departments of Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Care of the Elderly, and with Integrated care boards to ensure that patients receive optimal management consistently across the Trust.
  • Covering for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
  • Working in clinical and other domains within Care of the Elderly/Medicine if required including attendance at departmental educational and management meetings
  • Supervising and managing junior medical staff.
  • Carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation of junior staff and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education locally and nationally.
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.
  • Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Undertaking additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Lead and Clinical Director, on behalf of the Divisional and Medical Director, three months after the commencement date of the appointee.  This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.
