Job overview

This is a replacement substantive post within Community Paediatrics.  The post holder will provide Neurodisability services for children with complex physical disability and also contribute to the palliative care service.

The post holder will be expected to develop expertise and lead services for children with Down Syndrome.

The post is available as a full time position, but those wishing to work less than full time are welcome to discuss. The post is subject to the Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s terms and conditions and the salary reflects national contract provisions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to assess and manage children with complex physical neurodisability, including children with cerebral palsy, children with neuromuscular conditions and those with genetic disorders, amongst others.  These children are often managed with guidance from tertiary neurology services based in Nottingham, Sheffield and Birmingham.

The post holder will also hold clinics in one of the local special schools once a month.

Although prior experience is not essential, the post holder will be expected to work alongside an extended scope physiotherapist in the paediatric tone management service.  This role includes administering botulinum toxin injections for the management of spasticity if indicated.  If necessary, training will be made available to fulfil this aspect of the post.

Children with neurodisability often have life limiting or life threatening conditions and part of this role will include parallel planning for palliative care where appropriate.

The post holder will lead the service for children with Down Syndrome, including keeping up to date with latest guidance and advising the wider community paediatric team on current surveillance and management.
