Hours: 30 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to join our Cancer service department working within our Colorectal Cancer team.

We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse with demonstrable clinical experience within this field who can function well in a team as well as under their own initiative and who can respond to changing service priorities with this patient group and lead the team of cancer nurses within this service.

We are looking for an individual who has an interest in Colorectal cancer and can work with our clinical team to support and develop the surgical and oncology pathways for this patient group alongside developing their own advance practice in this area. You will be the lead nurse in the Colorectal Cancer nursing team, providing management support to colleagues as well as being an active clinical member supporting patients and their families through their treatment and beyond. You will deliver and support high standards of clinical care both as a direct care giver and indirectly through the support and education of the wider workforce.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the work of colorectal cancer nursing across the hospital.

This leadership role will encompass:

• Clinical assessment, treatment, care and support of patients at all stages of their pathway
• Information and support to patients, families and carers
• Clinical support of senior nursing and medical staff in decisions regarding care and treatment plans.

It is expected that the individual will be an expert practitioner in nursing with a high level of clinical credibility; the ability to establish close working relationships with senior nurses and medical staff; the ability to influence policy and practice.

The post holder will work closely with the Colorectal medical and nursing team.

This rapidly expanding modern and busy hospital offers many training opportunities for their staff, recent developments have led to investment and ongoing development plans for a large cancer centre onsite. This developing service is supported by a forward thinking & supportive Management Team, Nurse Practitioners, Palliative Care Team & Macmillan Information and Support Centre.

We firmly believe in holistic care, complementary therapy, clinical psychology and Citizen Advice Bureau all have clinics in the unit. We also offer carers and patient support groups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Nurse - Patient relationship

• Demonstrates an in depth understanding of the ethical, moral and legal issues in caring for patients with cancer.
• Demonstrates advanced communication skills in all contexts - with patients, their families and carers, senior medical and nursing staff.
• Communicate sensitive, condition related, information to patients with empathy and reassurance.

Management of patient health / illness status

• Demonstrates a high level of clinical knowledge and expertise in Colorectal nursing.
• Undertakes assessment and treatment of patients with Colorectal cancer and provide holistic needs assessments.

Education

• Works as a role model and supports high standards of care by working clinically alongside nursing and medical staff

• Identifies the educational needs of patients, their carers and their families in relation to Gynaecology cancer and works with the Macmillan Information and Support Nurse to address these at an individual and a community lev

Professional role

• Analyses and interprets national and local recommendations for Colorectal cancer and develops plans with others to implement and achieve compliance
• Attends quarterly cancer network meetings in the specialty of Colorectal cancer
• Contributes to the hospital weekly Colorectal MDT meeting and the cancer network measures it must achieve

Operational

• Contributes to the design, planning and development of the Colorectal cancer service and patient pathways.

• Participates in annual Macmillan service reviews of cancer nursing in MKUH
