This is an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals, interested in pursuing careers in Gynaecological Oncology to join a reputable and established team of clinicians and researchers.  Based at the QE Hospital in Gateshead, the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC) offers experience in developing extensive clinical and specialised surgical skills, in addition to pursuit of clinical research.  NGOC offers a broad range of surgery, and is famed for its ultra-radical surgical repertoire, and early adoption of innovation.  It is a European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) accredited Centre of Excellence for Ovarian Cancer.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a successful candidate to undertake an MD/PhD as part of an ongoing early detection CRUK grant, working in collaboration with the NGOC, Sir John Burn, professor of clinical genetics at Newcastle University and Dr Neil Ryan, Chief Scientific Officer and Clinical Lecturer at The University Of Edinburgh.

This post is for 12 months initially and is extendable depending on the research project.  The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop and lead on clinical research projects which will lead to relevant publications.

It is expected that shortlisted candidates will be interviewed provisionally on the 16th of January 2025, with the post-holder starting early 2025.

Main duties of the job

Research Element (50% component) There will be a specific clinical research project assigned to the successful candidate as mentioned above. There is plentiful opportunity to collaborate with other Fellows within this large team of gynaecological oncology trainees. The applicant will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research aspect of work, under a named research supervisor. Clinical Element (50% component)

The post-holder will be trained to assess patients referred to our tertiary unit. The post holder’s clinical duties will be based on our in-patient surgical ward. This encompasses arranging investigations, selecting appropriate treatment and providing post-operative care. The post holder will require excellent communication skills to work on this ward providing care to patients with a wide range of disease presentations. Communication, team working and organizational skills are paramount in the care of our patients. The post holder will be required to demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of their practice.

The post-holder will also be expected to attend a variety of outpatient clinics which include new and follow-up Gynae-oncology clinics, colposcopy clinics and vulval skin clinics.

The post-holder’s clinical timetable may however be flexible to accommodate the clinical aspects of the research project – for instance clinical specimen collection.
