Clinical Pharmacist Band 6 - Band 7 Development Role (Dependant on Experience).
The Pharmacy Team are based at Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford and provide a clinical and supply service to our wards and community teams situated both onsite and across the county of Surrey. Inpatient units are in Guildford (5 minutes’ walk from the train station), Chertsey (on the St Peter’s Hospital site) & the Meadows at Epsom.
This is a great opportunity for a pharmacist looking to develop their skills in mental health pharmacy and make a significant difference to the health outcomes of the people who use our services.
The role will include the provision of a ward level clinical pharmacy service working as part of the multidisciplinary team, as well as providing support to our Dispensary colleagues. The work is varied and includes provision of mental health related medicines information. We direct physical health queries to and are supported with provision of training by Frimley Park Medicines Information service with whom we have a service level agreement. The Trust have a good record for research and development, so there will be involvement in clinical trials and training.
We can support training to become an independent prescriber.
Main duties of the job
Our vision statement is to help people recover and to keep people safe through optimal use of medicines. The successful candidate will be an organised, flexible individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and keen to learn more about mental health medicines optimisation.
Experience in mental health would be an advantage, but not essential for the right candidate with a keen interest in this area. Ideally you will already hold a post-graduate qualification in clinical / mental health pharmacy, but we can support the right candidate with this if you are newly qualified.
The role will require this person to:
- Deliver a clinical pharmacy service to in-patient wards across the different sites of the Trust (at Deacon Unit/ Meadows/ our site at St.Peter's and Ashford hospital/ Farnham Road Hospital) as directed by the Lead Clinical Pharmacist.
- Provide clinical support to the Trust dispensary, based at Farnham Road Hospital and be part of the on-call rota with other members of the team.
- Engage with RPS and CPPE initiatives for newly qualified and foundation pharmacists.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To follow and utilise RPS post-registration foundation pharmacist curriculum.
- To undertake CPPE Newly Qualified Pharmacist pathway, for those registered with GPhC since 2020 or returning to practice after a break to enable progression to band 7.
- To work through SABP Clinical Pharmacy Training Manual and associated competency assessments to progress to band 7.
- To deliver bespoke clinical pharmacy services to allocated in-patient wards across the Trust for people who use our services / carers, by informing them of the purpose and possible side effects of their medication and to encourage them in the optimal use of their medicines.
- To be responsible for identifying and reporting of medicine related errors and supporting staff with training and service improvement.
- To ensure safe and appropriate use of medicines to maximise benefit and minimise risk to patients. This includes regular scrutiny of prescriptions, identification of significant drug interactions, compliance with legal aspects of medicine supply (Medicines Act, Mental Health Act) and compliance with Trust medication guidance.
- To identify and respond to the specialist or complex pharmaceutical information needs of patients, carers, doctors, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team, ensuring information is provided in a timely and appropriate manner
- To provide advice to clinicians on the use of unlicensed medicines and other areas of practice where evidence base is lacking, and on formulary compliance
- To assist with the scrutiny of Consent to Treatment forms
- To support the Dispensary team when needed to scrutinise prescriptions, perform, supervise, and check the dispensing of drugs ensuring accuracy and recording details on pharmacy computerised data record system.
- To support the Education and Training Lead Pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of training for pharmacy trainees. This will include supervision of Pharmacy Undergraduates, Trainee Pharmacists and Trainee Pharmacy Technicians.
- To be responsible for own continuing professional development CPD to continue to update own clinical knowledge and skills.
- To assist in the preparation and updating of relevant standard operating procedures and guidelines
- To assist in dispensing and checking of clinical trial medicines as required by the Pharmacy team.
