Job overview

The post will offer good experience and exposure to a range of Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgery conditions. There will be training in outpatients; theatre and endoscopy with a commitment to the general surgery take expected. Focussed endoscopy training will be provided at a level commensurate with the previous experience of the successful candidate.

To reflect the importance of SDEC the on call commitment is 1:5 during the week and 1:8 at the weekends. Flexible working patterns can be considered for the right candidate, reflecting the progressive nature of the department we are creating. We expect those applying for these positions to have 2 full years of experience in both elective and emergency care in all aspects of general surgery to help support more junior members of the team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder Main duties include:

Liaising with nurses, F1/2, registrars, patients, relatives and senior medical staff.

Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.

Attend outpatient clinics.

Take part in rostered emergency work.

Write discharge summaries.

Study for examinations and maintain continued professional development.

Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.

Undertake audit as directed.

Participate in the on-call rota which includes night shifts

Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDT)

Attend hand-over meetings with day and night on-call team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Colorectal department offers care to a wide range of Colorectal/General Surgery conditions and strives to provide patients with individualised clinic care. The team provides an inpatient, outpatient and emergency hospital service to the adult population which includes patients with newly-diagnosed colorectal cancer in addition to the service for existing colorectal cancer patients. We provide expertise in a range of benign and elective colorectal conditions in the acute and elective setting. The department has consultant-led outpatient clinics, surgery, oncology (including chemotherapy), diagnostic imaging and pathology services which are all provided on site. This post offers training equivalent to the Deanery appointed ST3 posts which will include elective care and emergency on-call duties. The Clinical Fellow (ST3 level) will work alongside Deanery appointed Specialist Trainees and take part in the same weekend on-call rota with an on call supplement added to their salary. The day to day running of inpatients services is managed by a team comprising F1/2 doctors, CT Level Clinical Fellows/SHO and a Specialist Registrars.
