An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our Childrens Continence Team
The newly appointed person will work closely with the team in developing a new Containment Products Service for Dudley Children. You will support with continence toileting plans and help review children that receive containment products.
The post holder will undertake a range of delegated tasks, reporting to the children's continence nurse specialists
The team you will be joining are very supportive. You will be offered both clinical and managerial supervision.
Main duties of the job
- This role is to work with children under 19yrs of age; the role greatly involves the understanding of a child’s development, especially they’re developmental abilities in terms of bladder and bowel function
- Assist in the day to day delivery of the Continence Service, through direct patient contact, carrying out assessments and treatments in a timely manner without direct supervision.
- Assist in the assessment, review and treatment of toilet training plans
- Assist in the assessment and review of children requesting and accessing containment products Assist in the development and delivery of the Childrens Continence service and Childrens Containment products service.
- Independently manage own caseload of patients to optimise patient outcomes
- You will be supporting children through their fears and anxieties in regards to toileting.
- Supporting parents and carers in the journey of helping their child in gaining continence.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Safeguarding
- To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people and to adhere to the BCHFT Safeguarding Children Policy and Local Safeguarding Children Board Policies and Procedures
- To work closely with social services and participate in safeguarding meetings and write reports.
- You will be working with children with a variety of issues which can include physical and/or learning disabilities.
- To support complex and vulnerable families as delegated by and under the supervision of the Childrens Continence nurse
Clinical
- Re- Assessment of continence products when indicated
- Early identification where children may need extra specialist support with toilet training
- Prepare and deliver continence promotion advice on individual and group basis.
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Liaising with the allocated nurse to discuss patient progress
- IT skills, use of data bases, word, power-point, publisher.
- To monitor, evaluate and modify programmes of care, to measure the effectiveness of the plan or to alter in event of changes in the child’s health and wellbeing. o
- To support children with Primary Nocturnal Enuresis when they are using alarm treatment.
- To support the nurse with completing assessments such as bladder scanning and/or urinalysis
- Be able to work creatively and have the ability to motivate children and families towards goals.
- Participate in teaching events and work-shops for health professionals, local authority, children and their families.
- Support other staff and outside agencies with issues involving individual children in their care who having continence issues.
- Work within other settings for example, special schools, children centres, nurseries, homes etc.
- Supporting qualified staff to prioritise the clinical caseload by providing relevant information and taking on delegated tasks to ensure a team approach.
- Obtain informed consent prior to all nurse activities, and work within the confines of the mental capacity act.
- To ensure cleanliness and maintenance of any equipment
- Participate in clinical and service audits to support team operations and improvement. Including data collection and inputting. Communication
- This includes working in partnership with internal and external colleagues and partners. The post holder will work in a range of settings including clinics, Children’s Centres and clients own home.
- Address barriers to communication with service users, such as those with cognitive impairment, sensory deficit, or alternative first language. Consider the use of interpreter services, family members or alternatives such as written instruction or picture boards.
- Contribute to daily handover/caseload meetings, providing appropriate updates to aid with treatment planning, and provide feedback to the continence nurse.
- Exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances, such as children with severve, complex and palliative conditions.
- Exposure to unpleasant working conditions, including body fluids, soiled linen,
- To attend Bladder and bowel forums and other relevant Forums pertinent to the role
- To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues
- To adhere to Trust Policies and Guidelines at all times e.g. Incident reporting
- To deliver services effectively within the resources available
Competencies and Learning
- Ensure information is evidence based.
- Be responsible for working to own scope of practice and discuss concerns with qualified
- professional and MDT to ensure appropriate plans and outcomes are achieved.
- Completion of onward referrals to services following discussion with children’s continence nurse e.g. Level three; referral to Paediatrician
- Recognise where patient or scenario complexity requires the intervention of a qualified nurse, escalating concerns in a timely manner.
- Actively participate in clinical supervision and annual performance appraisal.
- Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development
- Maintain mandatory training compliance and report to team lead, highlighting any barriers to compliance.
- Actively participate in team quality improvement days, contributing to service development.
