Job overview

We are looking for a Band 7 Practitioner Psychologist or Accredited CBT Therapist to join our Kidney and Urology service within the Renal and Cardiovascular Division at Royal Free Hospital. This 12-month, part-time (0.69 WTE – 26 hours per week) post is ideal for a compassionate clinician looking to make real impact in specialist medical settings.

The role involves:

  • Supporting the K-FiT (Kidney Fitness for Transplantation) Programme, for patients living with kidney failure and obesity to achieve weight loss goals required for kidney transplantation through psychological assessments, individual and group interventions and motivational work.
  • The Liver Transplant inpatient service, where you will provide brief psychological interventions and support to patients during critical stages of their medical journey.

You’ll work alongside a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team comprising dietitians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, surgeons, and nurses, contributing to holistic, world-class care. The role also includes opportunities for service development, audit, and research.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working autonomously within a very supportive structure, has a passion for improving patient outcomes, and is looking to develop or deepen expertise in physical health psychology and transplant-related care.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work very closely with our renal multidisciplinary team and deliver specialist biopsychosocial assessments to patients referred to the K-FiT programme. You will support a small number of patients living with kidney failure and obesity, to make the behavioural and psychological changes required to become eligible for kidney transplantation. You will provide formulations and brief, focused psychological interventions for common mental health difficulties including anxiety, low mood, adjustment, emotional eating, and health-related stress many of which may significantly impact treatment adherence and clinical outcomes. You will also facilitate our 8-week K-FiT Mood and Food support group.

You should have excellent communication skills, confidence working within MDTs and the ability to manage and prioritise a varied caseload. Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively are essential.

The post holder will work on-site at the Royal Free Hospital on agreed days (must include a Wednesday and Friday). You will be supported by the senior psychologists and be part of a wider psychology team delivering high-quality, integrated care across renal and liver transplant services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will provide a psychology service to patients under the K-FiT weight management programme and the liver transplant service at the Royal Free Hospital. This includes assessment and intervention for common psychological difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, and emotional eating, which may impact treatment outcomes.

You will work closely with the K-FiT multidisciplinary team to support patients living with kidney failure and obesity to achieve weight loss goals for transplant eligibility. In the liver transplant service, you will provide brief psychological interventions to inpatients. Through this role, you will gain experience delivering psychological support in complex physical health contexts, working alongside senior psychologists and a wider clinical team.
