We are currently recruiting for Band 5 Staff Nurses to work on our complex multi-specialty surgical 36-bedded ward on Harborne Hospital Level 4 (part of CDG 9A)
This ward cares for patients who are one step down from critical care and EPOC who have had surgery for Colorectal, Upper GI, Sarcoma and Urology conditions.
We work closely with our surgical and specialist nursing teams to develop a multi-disciplinary approach which shapes and provides high class surgical care for our patients.
We are adopting the ERAS-Plus approach to improve patient outcomes and experience.
We are looking for nurses with the skills to thrive within a fast-paced environment and the ability to cope under pressure.
Ideally you will already have experience on a surgical ward, and you must have a passion for post-operative care and ERAS recovery.
In turn we will offer you opportunities to develop your clinical skills in complex post-operative care.

Demonstrate skills relating to care of complex surgical cases including the ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient careAble to cope with complex cases in a busy, fast-paced environmentProvable experience in communicating clearly and at an appropriate level of detail and technical information to patients and their family / carersPassionate about post-operative care and willing to train (or have already trained) on ERAS-PlusWilling to assist with development of junior / less experienced staff, including Student Nursing Associates

1.Clinical Practice:
Be responsible for completing/ undertaking relevant nursing/ clinical procedures and practice underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experienceAct as an advocate for patients within the areas, to ensure a patient focused approach to the delivery of careEnsure patients receive high quality clinical care and a positive patient experience, having regard to their customs, beliefs and ethnicityPromote a clean and safe environment for staff, patients and visitors, including risk management and incident reporting in any areas of concernRecognise and act to avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of patientsMonitor patient progress and ensure accurate, legible and timely documentation regarding the patient's care and treatment, both paper based and electronicallyDevelop and initiate nursing assessments and care plans based on your assessment and observation of the patient's physical and psychological well-being / illnessWork towards safe and timely discharge plans and/or transfer of care from the ward/service, ensuring barriers to discharge/ transfer are identified and acted on appropriatelyWork alongside other health care professionals to ascertain treatments and advise on nursing prioritiesHave accountability for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to the Trust PolicyEnsure effective handover of patients between shifts/healthcare professionals is done using a range of communication aids such as verbal handover/ written documentation/referral

Facilitate patient flow, including bed and pathway management, clinic operations and case load coordination through liaison with the nurse in charge/ supervisor
Be mindful of own and others body language and barriers which may affect communicationKnow and adhere to all Trust policies, procedures and systems for safeguarding including the assessment of Mental Capacity, the process for requests for Deprivation of Liberty Standards and demonstration of the principles of PreventEnsure effective communication and liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary teamAddress any immediate concerns or complaints as they arise and escalate / report as required
3.Professional:
Take personal responsibility for attendance at mandatory training and updating as per Trust statutory and mandatory training requirementsContribute to the setting and monitoring of clinical standardsParticipate in annual appraisal and maintain a professional portfolio which supports revalidationInduct, orientate, supervise, train and assess unregistered nursing staff helping them to achieve their learning outcomes. Support nursing students/ trainees who are working within the ward/ unit/ department teamDevelop and maintain competence in the use of electronic records, information and communication systems as required by the serviceYou may be deployed / expected to work in any part of the organisation should the need arise to ensure patient safety is maintainedRecognise the emotional impact of practice in self and others, and take appropriate action and reporting to line manager if it may impact personal performance
