Here at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (WAHT) we are looking for experienced, dedicated and enthusiastic Vaccinators to join our Maternity Team.Working alongside our friendly and professional multidisciplinary team across 3 sites, you will be helping to protect our pregnant population from common diseases and infections.

Main duties of the job

With a focus on RSV, Pertussis and Seasonal Flu, you will provide counselling and use your clinical judgement to safely deliver routine immunisations in clinics to make sure that across the County of Worcestershire, pregnant women and their unborn babies are protected. You will be responsible for recording these immunisations on our EPR as well as on RAVS (training can be provided).

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

To provide those pregnant people who access our maternity service a robust approach to the materntal immunisation programme including seasonal Flu, pertussis, RSV and COVID vaccinations.

Conducting clinical assessments and reviewing complex medical histories and potential adverse reactions.

To counsel service users on the risks and benefits of each vaccine to include possible side affects.

You will work as an Immunisation Nurse providing clinical expertise to pregnant women and their babies.

The post holder will ensure that appropriate vaccinations are offered and administered to all pregnant women and that they are actively encouraged to uptake.

You will ensure that women and their partners are given up to date informed choice regarding immunisations for themselves and their babies.

Preparation of vaccines prior to administration by the immuniser using aseptic technique including vaccine reconstitution in accordance with manufacturers guidance.

Participate in clinical audit programmes and service evaluation.

The post holder will be required to maintain up to date medical immunisation records as required. The post holder will provide optimum quality of care to patients, offering support to the multi-professional team.

KEY DUTIES:

1.Clinical Responsibilities

Work in partnership with the client, Midwives, GP, obstetricians and otheragencies to ensure that all women are offered and given where appropriate Seasonal Influenza, Pertussis, RSV and Covid-19 vaccinations.

Assisting with the overall coordination of the multi-site activity and day to day delivery of the immunisation programme.

To administer vaccinations in accordance with National Guidance and Trust Policy under a signed approved PGD.

Conduct pre-vaccination clinical assessments to confirm if the pregnant person meets the criteria for safe vaccination, including previous vaccinations undertaken, current health condition, assessment of medical history and allergies.

Ensure knowledge of conditions that affect suitability for vaccination and previous vaccination history.

To counsel service users on the risks and benefits of each vaccine to include possible side affects and advise on any possible adverse reactions and contraindications.

Facilitate the learning of immunisation and vaccination skills through supervision, teaching and support.

Actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, advising and arranging support for women as required.

Ensure that records that the vaccinations have been administered are maintained in the appropriate medical record.

Ensure quality standards are met.

Maintain up to date professional knowledge, which is demonstrated through clinical practice.

Be accountable for own actions in accordance with the NMC Code.

Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team including situations where difficulties in comprehension occur.

Uphold and maintain the Trusts values.

Actively strive to ensure that you are fully up to date with policies and guidelines.

Ensure systems are in place to ensure the safety and confidentiality of patients at all times.

To counsel and administer seasonal flu vaccination to all women following their USS at 12/40 if appropriate.

To counsel and administer Pertussis vaccination to all women following their USS at 20/40 if appropriate.

Ensure this offer is recorded accurately and timely on RAVS and Badgernet.

To check consent and undertake a general health assessment prior to vaccination or screening test.

To able to undertake and act upon baseline observations including BP, temperature, respirations if required.

Ability to respond to a clinical emergency and coordinate the appropriate support and response.

To escalate appropriately and in a timely manner any concerns raised by the mother about fetal wellbeing.

To use experience and judgement to assess how best to offer vaccinations to service users, including consideration of interpreter services.

2.Clinical Governance

Promote best practice in health, safety and security.

Contribute to quality improvement.

To ensure that relevant procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

To ensure good standards of practice within the Maternity service through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.

Monitor and evaluate national and local Key Performance Indicators in relation to maternity vaccinations.

Ensure that risks are reported using Datix incident reporting system.

3.Management & Leadership

To liaise with other teams and departments within the directorate to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and discuss with Public Health Midwife/Matron/Director of Midwifery /Directorate Manager any problems regarding midwifery management.

To ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.

Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own and others workload.

Coordinate the vaccination referrals across all Trust sites, arranging appointments at an appropriate gestation.

To maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of role.

Contribute to the development of services.

To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

Action where appropriate clinical incident reports, complaints and monitoring of risks.

Promote best practice in relation to clinical risk and governance issues.

To liaise with colleagues in pharmacy and supply chain to ensure adequate stock of relevant vaccines.

Participate in staff education of the Maternal Immunisation programme.

4. Education, Professional Development and Training

Registered Nurse/Midwife with evidence of post qualification clinical experience and ongoing CPD.

To identify areas for development of skills in accordance with the NMC guidelines.

Develop knowledge and practice in an area of work.

Attend all Trust, midwifery and specialism related mandatory training.

To take every reasonable opportunity for maintaining, developing and acquiring competencies and skills for self-development.

Providing additional knowledge and experience in managing complex patients presenting for vaccination and awareness of when to seek further advice.

Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.

Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.

Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times.

Ensure maintenance of Professional Registration.
