The Trust is in the process of expanding its in-house Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service and is looking for an exceptional Advisors to deliver a highly effective service.

The NHS Long Term Plan is committed to addressing health inequalities on a national level. A key aspect to the plan is to support the NHS to significantly reduce smoking prevalence, preventing ill-health and disease. The correlation between the use of Tobacco and disease is well founded. With this, an exciting opportunities have arise to join a new Tobacco Dependency Service for United Hospitals Lincolnshire.

The service will offer assessment, advice, and evidence-based treatment including Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), psycho-social intervention and support to those who use Tobacco within the acute healthcare setting. Onward referrals to community services and patient follow up will be key in improving outcomes for the local health population. Providing evidence-based stop-smoking interventions within an acute healthcare setting has demonstrated a significant reduction in re-admissions and mortality and promote a healthier smoke-free Lincolnshire.

Main duties of the job

This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The post holder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.

As part of the Lincolnshire Tobacco Dependency Service we are increasing the support we offer to people who are admitted to, or attend our Hospitals, to help them to stop smoking and be smoke free during an inpatient admission (temporary abstinence). The programme will also provide more support to staff who wish to quit and help us to have smoke free hospitals and grounds.

The programme recognises smoking as an addiction (tobacco dependency) and that it is a chronic relapsing clinical condition that prematurely kills at least half of the people who smoke. Smoking is seen as a medical condition that can be treated rather than it being a lifestyle choice.

This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through support for people to stop smoking. The post holder will provide tobacco treatment advice and support to individuals and groups of people who want to stop smoking, reduce their harm from tobacco or for temporary abstinence when in hospital. This will be for both patients and staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Specifically the post holder will:

  • Provide 1:1 behavioural support and pharmacotherapy advice for smokers who wish to quit and to support temporary abstinence during a hospital admission.
  • Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.
  • Work with patients and staff to change their behaviour to improve their health.
